UK-based South Asianists are facing new academic freedom-related challenges today. On one hand they may be under pressure in the UK itself, in the class-room for instance; on the other doing research in South Asia may be more difficult, not only in terms of access, but also because of the quality and quantity of the available sources. The Academic Freedom Observatory (AFO) intends to document and measure these changes. To this end, it will organise every year a survey based on a totally anonymous questionnaire.

The results of the 2025 survey, based on 58 responses, are available here and you are invited to take part in the 2026 survey by using this link.
