ABSTRACT
Mind the Gap: The Chronology of Painted Grey Ware and the Prelude to Early Historic Urbanism in Northern South Asia
Peter Magee
Painted Grey Ware occupies an important position in our understanding of the relationship between the two urban periods of the Harappan and Early Historic ages in south Asia. In this paper we contribute to the understanding of this horizon by re-examining the C14 chronology of sites that contain this distinctive material. We suggest that the acrimonious debate that has sometimes occurred concerning the chronology of this material is more reflective of methodological problems than substantive differences. An earlier chronology for PGW is tentatively supported by the data and the implications, if any, for our understanding of the relationship between the Harappan and Early Historic periods are discussed.
