This paper , based on a study of more than a hundred archaeological sites in the Agra-Mathura-Aligarh-Bulandshahr sector of the upper Ganga-Yamuna Doab in Uttar Pradesh , tries to understand the famous early historical site of Mathura --- the site of Mathura itself and the way it was linked with the other contemporary sites of the region and beyond. Bateswar is located like Mathura on the left bank of the Yamuna but much further downstream. Situated like Chakranagar in the Yamuna ravines, Bateswar was the most important early historical city on the Yamuna bank between Chakranagar and Mathura. The third major site of this sector, Ahar, lies on the bank of the Ganga to the northeast of Bulandshahr This paper studies these sites in the wider context of the contemporary site distribution of the region and analyses the routes which linked them.
