ABSTRACT
The Early Historic Brick Temple at Chandor (ancient Chandrapura), Goa.
D. Kennet and J. V. P. Rao
This paper presents the preliminary results of a season of archaeological excavation at the Early Historic brick temple at Chandor in Goa by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Society for South Asian Studies in 2000.
The paper describes three successive phases of brick temples which were built on the same site and aligned along the same axis. It is argued that the date of the earliest structure is 3rd or 4th century A.D., the second possibly 6th century, and that the latest was abandoned at about the end of the 13th century A.D. The plan of each of the three phases is quite different. The earliest two phases (I and II) have no parallels from elsewhere in India and do not appear to fit into any known tradition. The paper concludes by considering to which tradition the two earliest phases may belong.
