Annual BASAS Nirman Foundation Lecture

"Bridging the Growing Divide? The Congress and Indian Democracy"

The lecture will be held on Wednesday 19 April 2006, from 18.00 in Lecture Theatre B34 on the basement level of Birkbeck College, University of London, Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HX, UK. A drinks reception will follow from 19.00 onwards in Room B04 of the basement level of Birkbeck College. This annual lecture takes place thanks to the generosity of the Nirman Foundation.

BASAS Prize 2006
CONGRATULATIONS to BASAS Prize winner Sonia Benjamin (School of Oriental and African Studies, UK) for her presentation and paper, A Rose by Any Other Name: Exploring the Politics of Roja. An updated version of this paper will be invited for publication in Contemporary South Asia BASAS annual issue.
Special commendation also to Srijana Mitra Das (University of Cambridge, UK) for her presentation and paper, "Say Shava Shava!" Self-Censorship, Changing States and the Cultural Economy of Punjabiyat in Bombay Cinema
Each year, the British Association of South Asian Studies (BASAS) awards a prize for the most outstanding paper given by a student at its annual conference. The paper may be on any subject relevant to the conference.
- NB: To be eligible for the Prize, a written paper of no more than 8000 words must be submitted to the BASAS Secretary by 14 April 2006.
- The deadline for submissions will be posted here shortly.

Executive Committee Elections
There will be an election for membership of the British Association for South Asian Studies (BASAS) Executive Committee at the annual AGM to be held in London on Thursday, 20 April 2006.
